I'm Judgey

That's a lot of judgment.

One time I was doing some work for a client and researching adjectives. Turns out, you can create your own word by adding "y". It's a law or rule or what have you in the English language. How convenient. anyways...

I was reading one of my favorite newsletters the other day, Lenny, and they suggested an exercise: keep a piece of paper in your general vicinity throughout the day and mark an "x" on it every time you judge someone. They suggested you do it for a month, but all it took was a couple of days for me.

Holy. Buckets.

FYI these are not small, “that dude is short” judgments. These are JUDGEY JUDGMENTS! How ashamed I felt.

What gives me the right to be so judgmental? Are you serious? Why psychoanalyze every person I see? In the store? On the street? Online? Family? Friends? Why is it so easy to determine who someone else is, before ourselves? I’m not the first to point this out: when you pick up a stone to throw at the 100 pound model/athlete on instagram, or the uber wealthy customer, or the smelly dude disdainfully looking at you- put the stone down! Or should I say phone? When was the last time you put action towards a goal? Move compadre! Make a change! Even the smallest jealousy, anger, resentment you feel can change your life entirely. Focus on you. Focus on your life, your nature, your patterns, your thoughts.

Stop! Make it stop. My friend once told me, while I was complaining about an annoying song I had stuck in my head, “change the track…you know, like skip the song, sing a different one.” Then gazed at me like this was the most obvious concept. Is it that easy? To change the way you think?

The answer is yes.
